Yanmar 38 hp 3jh2e - kbw10 leaking gearbox oil?

I'm a new owner to this boat and not super experienced with diesel motors. I'm looking for some advice on how to proceed with the problem pictured my guess is that the gearbox seals need to be replaced. I checked the gearbox dipstick when the engine was still a little warm and it seemed to be completely empty. If it is a matter of putting new seals in, can that be accomplished in the water or does it have to be hauled out? I cleaned up the previous oil before getting this result which came from about 20 min of low rpm going to the fuel dock and back. Thanks for any feedback!!
