An old engine I know, now 30 years old, but is there anything likely to be particularly nasty about such an engine? Apparently it had a big 'overhaul' in 2008 including shells and rings...which at least sounds fairly thorough...

Opinions please?

Keep it fed with clean fuels, run it according to handbook - that is most of the time around 2500rpm with occasional bursts of full throttle. Change oil and filter regularly and make sure waterways are kept clear. Regularly check and clean electrical connections. Nothing much to go wrong otherwise.

Don't forget there is a rear anode in the cooling system. The front one is easy to get at and gets checked regularly. The one hidden out of sight often gets overlooked. I used to love the plume of soot on my old one on start up!
