Hardly a new topic but I want to know what is the best alternator belt for a Yanmar 2GM20 i.e. one that won't slip or create black dust. Make and Part Number please. Have been using a Halfords 763b toothed belt for some years but that now squeals for a minute or so on start up even with plenty of tension and fully charged batteries. 763b not recognised by Halfords now and would like something even better if possible.

I fitted a Gates 6463MC to mine. It’s been on there a few years now and it has been a vast improvement on the “genuine” Yanmar one that I fitted previously.

I use Gates on our 4JH4-HTE. The OE Yanmar belt produced lots of rubber dust even when correctly tensioned.

The Gates belt now installed is in its third season and has not been adjusted since early 2020.

strangely enough I can’t find where I got the recommendation from, but fortunately I bought two belts the last time around, based on the abysmal life provided by the two previous Yanmar/Mitsubishi, (and yes that is how it was spelled) ones. The second belt is still in its packet because the first has lasted so well. There was a little dust initially, but it abated quickly.

I have never fitted anything other than Yanmar parts to my 3GM30F. The original belts lasted for years, about 1500 hours I think. Engine has now done 2700 hours, now on its second set. Original hoses still fitted.

I used original belts on mine for several years without problems. I did get a bit of black dust but assumed it was normal. I think you always get a bit of dust but, on a car , it just blows away .
