It is a while since I was thinking about this problem because it is not a priority. Now I recall being shown by a knowledgeable guy the wires coming out of the alternator which "switch off" power to the field. That would have been the way it was installed on the Toyota bus as it was used solely to power the air-conditioner. Thanks.
(I've learned to only think about only what I am doing now because it can be a bit daunting otherwise.)
