Any good mineral oil will do like Shell Rimula. You use the same oil in both the engine and the gearbox. If you can get hold of an owners manual it will show you the amounts you need for the engine and gear box and I think it will also list some suitable oils including Shell Rimula. It is best to avoid synthetic oils.

i use a 10w40 car engine oil sold as for diesel engines. for the gearbox i use EP90 hypoid gear oil (standard stuff for car differentials) but this is for the saildrive version. if you have a shaft drive it's probably different.

check carefully on the gearbox oil, in the saildrive the 2 & 3GM use 90 grade while the 1GM uses 30 grade though the gearbox is the same model!

Gearbox uses same oil as for engine - only needs 1/3 of a litre - dont over fill.

I have had lubrication problems with both engine and gearbox on a 2 GM, and this is what I was advised by the Yanmar agent that put the problems right (I hope!)

The oil for my gearbox is straight sae 20 as advised by Yanmar - dont use multi grade engine oil since its lubricity eventually does for the cone clutch. Dont know whether there are other later gearboxes that will take different oils but this is certainly the case for my 1987 box.

I had problems with bore glazing on the engine, developed on a long trip under engine under heavy load and after a change to some Castrol car diesel engine oil. Both Yanmar and Castrol said that I had used too good an oil - the 2GM is an older more traditional design and thrives on straight mineral oil of the type you used to use in trucks. Yanmar sell the appropriate stuff. I'm currently running in after repairs and will then switch to straight SAE30.

Obviously I am repeating to you what others have said to me and only time will tell if it is correct.
