Hi,

Following the recent articles in PBO, I was wondering if any other readers had experienced impellor issues with their Yanmar 1GM10 inboards. I myself bought a new boat just under a year ago, with this engine and I have already replaced the impellor once after a 20 hour life span.

My two engines both 1GM10's have both done about 58 hours so far and seem ok, what did the article say I must have missed them. I have left them in all winter too as she is afloat.

Oh yes. Definitely carry a spare impeller. You will be changing it, don't doubt. I put a speedseal front on my waterpump too. That helps.

I change the raw water impeller every season (about 130 hours) and have had no problems underway (touch wood). Wouldn't want to do it without a Speedseal though.

There was (maybe still is) a problem with the the glue that holds the rubber to the centre sleave of the impeller.
The fix, as best as I remember, was to drill through and either put in a grub screw or drill right through the impeller and spindle and use a stainless split pin or the like.

I don't have a 1GM10 but my impellor already has a screw through the centre which acts as the "drive key" - and I always carry 2 spare impellors and I have a Speedseal - excellent piece of kit.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

We had a 1GM10 on our previous boat and in the last year or so had a few troubles with impellors.

Years ago, when we used the boat all the time we never had a problem, but recently (i.e.since kids!) we've only used the boat a few times a season and we seem to get through an impellor at the start of every trip.

A friend suggested that each time we left the boat for any length of time we should remove the impellor. We've since sold the boat so don't know if this would have worked but it sounded plausible. Apparently the paddles stick and then the glue isn't man enough to keep it in one piece.
