I have just taken delivery of an old 1gm10 that I hope with some work will be better than the one i have already.
It has come with an extra wheel that is designed to bolt onto the pulley wheel to enable you to start it with a string (like a Seagull). It was supplied by Marinepower and the instructions are to use it without lifting the decompression lever.
Has anyone ever seen one of these and more to the point has anyone seen one work.

We used to have a rope-start Lombardini 8hp air-cooled lump in an open boat. Prior to this I had used boats with handle start like Listers (I like listers).

With the rope start, things to be careful of, if the rope does not clear the notches it will wrap itself back to the wheel and wind in so fast you have to shout at your self to LET GO, this is not a 2hp seagull, you will not stall it! Be careful. If there is no rope, don't be fooled into making the rope longer, it only needs to be long enough to get it over one compression stroke, but long enough to allow you 'some' run up.

I would not go back to rope start, ever.

I have used one but had to modify the length of cord/rope because the confined space prevented me from being in the right position to pull it. This just entailed making the cord longer and having a second person do the decompression lever.
It did work every time if you pull fast enough.

I decided to try starting mine with the starting handle - apart from it rotating the wrong way, i.e. counterclockwise and me being a bit careful re keeping thumb clear as I broke my wrist a few years back using a starting handle it was surprisingly easy; from cold took three turns over, drop the lifter and off she went.

Some years ago Yanmar themselves had one modified with a pull start cord which they demonstrated on their (Barrus) stand at boat shows. seemed to work well enough

There is one in the local scrappy that has a factory fitted recoil starter, also electric start. Came out of one of the `toy´two seater cars that are so popular here.
