Was trying to start this after i managed to get the starter motor working[unfortunately the starter has died again now]
and for the life in me i cannot get it through compression by hand...consider myself a fit bloke as well....
it wouldn't start but was at least trying to as it was firing with some smoke from exhaust nothing changed when i increased throttle
im wondering if something is not connected right inside ?as ive had the front casing off
i connected the injector up and the spray looks nice but again doesn't increase when i open up the throttle...when turning by hand starter ...???

They are almost impossible to start by hand from cold. Provided you re-assembled the pump, rack and governor correctly nd not touched the limiter (big nut sticking out at the front) it should all work. Timiing is essentially fixed because you have to change shims where the injection pump goes into the housing.

Think you are going to have to wait to get a starter motor to get it to start.

Suggest you get hold of the official workshop manual (not the aftermarket ones) which will tell you everything you need to know.

Starting by hand is possible but is a bit of a knack and I doubt very much that you'd get it through compression without using the valve lifter.

Pull stop then release, make sure its released fully, three quarter throttle, lift valve lifter, turn handle keeping thumb on same side of handle as fingers, get it going some, then drop valve lifter whilst keeping turning and it'll go. Then sit down hardly able to breathe for about ten minutes, at least thats how it works with mine.

Doubt you'd see a difference in flow at the injector given its such a small engine.

Has it been in bits or just a case of not wanting to start?

Yes need a starter,no alternator fitted at mo
engine in shed on test bed
so i would not notice a difference in flow rate?
what mechanism makes diesel engine run faster?

if you really want to start it without a starter motor then setup a hot air gun, not blowtorch. point it to the intake (air box open) and try to start again height of engine makes a diffrence, it wants to be knee high. put handle in 5 oclock position and turn it upto compression, lift the decompression lever then wind like mad and drop the lever when handle is at 5 oclock position. takes a few goes to get the knack of it. dont forget 3/4 throttle. (i always make sure there is a small amount of grease on the end of the starting handle where it mates with the shaft)

I used a hair drier which did the job without the risk of melting anything expensive.
There are always starter motors forsale on ebay. Type in yanmar and then refine your search to boats and watercraft

Thanks ....Any ideas about using easy start and hand starting?...am able to spin through compression now using 2 hands and string on the decompressor to foot....lol
hot air gun sounds good...no air filter in there to damage...i want to see this engine running before forking out £120 notes....:)
