Yanmar 1GM10 gearbox issues

Slowly i'm getting a new engine together and today I offered up my Yanmar 1GM10 Engine to the KM2P gearbox I found for it....

What I don't understand is that the shaft from the gearbox doesn't seem to connect well enough with the clutch in the engine. There only seems to be a very small amount of shaft coupling with the clutch (maybe as little as 20mm?!) which worries me. Surely the splined shaft should engage further?

Am I being an idiot? Is there something i'm missing?

call your yanmar dealer, give them the engine serial number. ask what the appropriate gearbox is for that engine. i think yanmar used several different gearboxes depending on the year which you can tell by the serial #.
