I am about to replace the fuel filter cartridge on my newly acquired Macwester 27 Yanmar 1GM10 which appears simple enough .

My question is has anyone got an additional inline fuel /water separator filter such as a CAV 296 besides the original fuel filter or do you rely on the original only?

My boat has only the original filter and I would like to add an inline filter as I feel this is prudent .. what would you advise please ?

Common to fit an additional filter such as the CAV or a Racor between the fuel tank and the engine.

just a thought ..would I need to buy a hand pump /prime version , or will a standard fuel /water type suffice ?

Depends on the relationship between the tank pick up and the engine. If you put the filter in the current run of the pipe you should not need a primer.

Thanks Tranona ..so if I understand correctly the tank pick up being situated higher than the 'new' filter will cause the filter be gravity fed and thus filled ?

Yes, although even if it is not the pump on the engine should pull it through. If the pump pulls fuel through now it should also do it with the filter in the line.

The Racor filters are out of my budget range at the moment... I know its important to have the best available but my wallet if restricted !

Disposable filter, although you could probably clean them out and reuse in an emergency if you didn't have a spare.
