I had a nasty mess in the engine compartment caused by a pinhole leak in one of the oil pipes of my 1GM10. These oil pipes from Yanmar are made of steel (not a good idea in a marine environment). I saw on ebay the same pipes made from cupra nickel, ie no more rusting problems. Does anyone have any experience with using these pipes?

Yep I replaced the short pipe from ebay, pin hole leak also, that sprayed liberal amounts of oil all over the engine bay, and cos I left the cover off, in the cabin too! No leaks since, but this was only done in May...:)

It may not be a great idea but it is quite common. The exterior of the pipes are normally painted and that usually covers the corrosion issues. Not sure where your pipe failed but they usually fail through fretting (poor clamping) or at the brazed nipples. I wonder how many years service it has given - not sure cupro nickel will do better.

It's a well known problem on this engine and Yanmar have failed to do anything about it in the decades that the 1GM has been in production. Mine didn't leak but looked very rusty so I got a replacement made up by a local hydraulic shop in rustproof material at half the cost of the Yanmar pipe. No more problems for the last 15 years. I have heard of people using banjos and oil resistant fuel hose to replace a leaking oil pipe.

Do check that there is not a drip of seawater coming from the hole at the bottom of the water pump. This indicates that a seal is failing and needs to be replaced. This often accelerates the corrosion of the pipe underneath.

Similar problem but spotted when it was still a weep. Replaced it with hose plus banjos from local hydraulics firm. No problems7

My local branch of Pirtek (http://www.pirtek.co.uk/ - other hydraulic hose suppliers are available) made me a pair of 1GM10 oil hoses in about ten minutes for a shade over thirty quid. That included new, longer banjo bolts, because their banjos were thicker than the original Yanmar ones.
