I thought I'd better have a look but struggling to get the mounting plate off. Other bits of the engine get in the way of my basic socket set and combination spanners. Any cunning plans or ingenious devices to get these nuts off please ?
I did it on the last engine without removing owt but can't remember how.

I used to have one of these and I think I used to slacken the alternator mountings to improve access to the anode plate. Mine was however installed in such a way that access was fairly good, I could fairly easily reach the anode from the back or the front of the engine. If all else fails take the alternator and the starter motor off. They could probably benefit from a good clean anyway.

I use a combination spanner - the forward most nut is fairly straightforward to reach, but the other one needs the open end of the spanner put 'end-on', with a screwdriver through the ring end to give it a twist. With both nuts, you get about 1/8 of a turn each time you reposition the spanner.

As with all the nuts on a Yanmar, they are torqued up very tight at the factory, and you need really good quality spanners and sockets to avoid rounding them off. Best of luck!

Yes, remove the alternator and it is easy if you have good sockets. Take the plate off before you remove the remains of the anode. Make sure you replace the washer as well.

I had a Yanmar agent regularly service my engine and he always removed the alternator first to get at the anode. Also slackened the nut holding the anode before removing the plate that holds the anode.
