I have a 6 year old 35hp Yanma, freshwater cooled. Generally I am very pleased with the engine but after the first season of my ownership I want to change the saltwater impeller. This is on the port side of the engine, facing aft and the gap in the direction that you would withdraw the impeller (aft) before you meet the starter motor is only about 6cm - no room for a puller and it won't shift with just prising off with a screwdriver. Removing the pump body is really hard 'cos it fouls an engine mount so what is the 'designed in' solution??

The engine is a Yanma 3 cylinder, 35 HP. Seems to be standard on these engines, I looked at a new version at the boat show, same deal, water pump facing aft.

Sounds difficult. I have a four cylinder, same arrangement but more room for a puller before I hit the starter. In your situation I would try a solid fish hook into the rubber core and try to pull it that way, or dismount the starter and use a puller.
Awkward in an emergency. I have kept the shaft well greased to get it off easily and use a speedseal to get the cover off and on easily. So far I didn't need the puller.

Oh, and good luck with the impeller!
