Yammer 3YM20 starter motor

Hi The above burnt out so I replaced it It burnt out again 12 starts later Whilst under engine for 3 hours smelt burning Switched off solenoid clicked starter burnt out Dealer thinks it’s the relay but how would a faulty relay energise the SM? Checked ignition switch and all voltages were correct ie no voltage to the solenoid until ignition key turned to start position Therefore conclusion intermittent ignition switch tuning on SM when engine running or faulty replacement starter motor Thanks Regards Tarn

I believe Paul Rainbow has reported similar problems with starter relays. If the contacts stick in the on position it will energise the starter solenoid.

My advice would be to follow the dealers advice, and PR's experience, and replace the relay ( with a good quality one, not some bit of cheap eBay trash)

BUT also be very certain that the fault is not the ignition switch .

i seem to remember Full Circle having similar issues with the same engine when his boat was new
