Off to the boat show this week to try and do a deal for a small outboard. I know from doing searches of the forum archives that the question of what outboard to buy is a familiar one and I don't want to repeat that here but I just wondered if anyone had any experience with the new 4 stroke Yamaha's. They do a small water cooled 2.5hp which looks good but costs about the same as a good 4hp two stroke. Is it worth the difference over say the 2hp Honda4 or the 3.5hp Tohatsu 2 stroke?

Thanks

Gavin

Dont know about the small ones, but the 2 cyl is excellent, & very quiet.

no problems in the 2 years we have had it.

I have an eight horse yamaha which is great, but then i'm in the bahamas where yamaha spares are readily available, i had the 3.5 tohatsu before it was stolen, and it was great ran like a trainnever any bother, its also very light, in my opinion the fourstrokes are still to highly priced, another five years who knows?

I have just replaced a Tahatsu 2.5hp with the Yamaha 2hp 4 stroke. I find the dinghy goes better with the Yamaha and the build quality is better. The 2HP is on special at the moment at £349 inc 5 year warranty. The Tohatsu has no such warranty. It's a no brainer decision.

I have had a Yamaha 5hp two / st for 5yrs no problems .droped in the drink once got it out .changed the fuel dried the plug left it with the cover off in the sun for about 4hrs started 2nd or 3rd pull. Our friends bought a Honda 2hr 4 /st it had a problem of drawing up water and not starting .I think Honda made some sort of kit to fixit but charged for it !! cheers bob t

I had a 9.9 four stroke yamaha which ran quietly but parts were expensive when I needed to do work on it. A two stroke is a lot simpler with fewer parts, but that shouldnt matter too much as you are buying new.

well i had the yamaha 4 stroke nothing but trouble have now got a tohatsu 3.5 great runs like a sewing machine and 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the price ?
