There was a thread about this is in 2020, but unfortunately it did not seem to cover my example so rather than revive an old thread, I hope someone can cast some light on my questions.
Trying to ID the year of an outboard. can understand the label etc but it does not seem to make sense when looking at the various de-coding charts for Yamaha engines. Appreciate there is a bit missing - but this just refers to the HP (40) I know which is the SN, but what I can't see is how to fathom the year.
The letter B in the picture would seem to suggest 2003 but the engine is fitted with the COP (remote control outboard protection cut off) as far as I can tell this was introduced in 2008 for the 30-40hp engines.
On the opposite side of the engine there is a number with a ships wheel mark - no idea what that is.
Another site says that after 2005 the manufacturer started to just stamp the date on the transom - however I have looked closely with a high powered inspection lamp and can see nothing, of course.. could have been looking in the wrong place
