Does anyone know if a special tool is needed to remove the gearbox from a yamaha 25hp outboard ?
I have removed the lower leg and water pump but i need to take the prop shaft off and it seems some kind of `puller ` might be needed. All answers appreciated.

Not familiar with Yamahas. But you have taken the lower unit (gearcase) off and now you want to remove the propshaft from the gearcase. (You dont mean the vertical drive shaft)

Presumably you have removed the cap and the seals and bearing in it. I'd guess if it wont pull out a slide hammer might be called for.

You dont say what year or model but you might find the exploded diagrams at http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/?ls=outboard useful but I'd strongly advise reference to a workshop manual if you intend dismantling the gearbox.

If no detailed help is not forthcoming Id suggest posting on the Yamaha board of the iBoats forums
If you do though quote the full model particulars. Difficult to give detailed help without knowing the model involved.

nothing special needed, sometimes the shaft binds into the exhaust baffle resulting in a very hard to start outboard.
I have used a small vice clamped to the shaft, then hit the vice in the direction the shaft needs to come out.
