Can anybody tell me when the Malta first got a tell tale? I have searched this and every other forum I can find and still don't know! Some say the early (how early?) ones didn't others say it is half way up the leg or under the power head. The one I hae just bought has a serial number 302594 so I presume it is a 1994 beast.

When you say yours spits, from where? Sounds like the two holes half way up the shaft,am I correct?
Just come in from garage, took the bottom end off and checked impeller and it is ok. However the water pipe running up to the engine was seriously crudded up. Squirted WD40 up it and gave it a good seeing to with a straightened wire coat hanger, seemed to move most of it. Now I can blow through it. I am still none the wiser as to where (hopefully) the water will appear when I start it up! I will post after I start her up.

Cant help with the telltale, except that I'd expect them all to spit some water out of the back pressure relief port half way up the leg regardless of whether there is a separate tell tale or not.

I think you are wrong in your interpretation of the serial number.

The age of Yamahas until recently was indicated by a "date letter" on the name plate See http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/599291

Does your tell tale work from cold ie immediately?

In the absence of any other answers the implication in the manual available on the Yamaha website is that water should issue from the tell-tale immediately after starting.

( looking at the 1998 manual which is the earliest available on line)

I have attempted to include a photo of the I/D plate to show that it does not conform with the "normal" plate.
Also today, having nothing better to do I did some dismantling. I found that it does have a thermostat which I tested and is working and the water when it opens seems to drain down into the exhaust which suggests it is an early model. Any idea what year the plate suggests?

From what i can remember the one I bought in early 90's didn’t have a telltale from the head, only the two holes in the leg , but it soon got one! drilled small hole into water jacket insert short metal pipe then small hose through cowling nicely reassuring water flow ,only downside to watch out when spinning motor to reverse which is the reason they didn’t have a telltale in the first place

Mine was from 91 or 2. Did nt have one. Great little motor though. Gave up the ghost when it popped a core plug in 2009, Beyond economical repair. Shame..
