I ran my outboard in a dustbin filled with water over the weekend and noticed bubbles coming from the shaft where the lower and upper casings are joined (approx half way up the leg). I assume there is a problem? Easily fixed?

Probably not a problem and requires no fixing ..... But can you indicate where exactly on a photo or diagram.

See http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/parts.html for diagrams if it helps

Joints between the sections of the leg have no joint washer, and may even have drain holes to drain the water out when lifted . The joint faces can become corroded over time.

Provided nothing is actually loose /coming apart there is unlikely to be a problem

It's probably exhaust seeping through the joint in the exhaust leg. You could nip up the bolts a wee bit, but don't over do it in case you snap the bolts. Probably not worth worrying about if that's where the leak is coming from.

I had a similar problem on the same motor. Mine was water spraying from just above the water level. If you leg was well-immersed in the tanj it may have presented as exhaust gas. It's a mixture of exhaust and cooling water coming from that rotating swivel joint. The rubber ring is supposed to seal it but doesn't do it very well.
It is of no consequence.

Using Lakesailor's photo above, it is where the upper circular part of the leg joins the lower oval part - to the immediate right of the ring he has arrowed. There is a black circular plastic ring separating the drive casings and the bubbles are coming from there.

The ring wasn't the source of the leak, perhaps the arrow does look as though it is pointing to that. It was the same plastic (or rubber, not sure) ring that you describe that was the source. No problem at all. It used to chuff a bit though, and I hate things that chuff.

Ah I also thought you meant the (shift rod ???) grommet #12

but actually coming from the pivot bushing #35 & 36 ?

Obviously normal but I don't understand why water or bubbles come from there.

Where is it/ they coming from
