Yamaha f9.9 fuel consumption

... by the way, don`t use the generator..
it supplies 6 to 8 Amps from moderate revs on but is NOT regulated.
If you want to load your battery, use a Voltmeter and switch off loading if 14.4V will exceed.
I´ve busted one battery because the gen has loaded it with over 16V as it was full.

best,
Niels

Strage. Mine is the later grey model, but the output from the engine has been connected to my electrical system for years and has never caused any problem. The manual says connect directly to a battery. How else is the leccy start going to work?

Maybe your regulator is bu99ered.

Hi Angus,

Yes it is true, the manual tells us to use a large battery 12V and to connect directly. I did so. IF the hrs you run the engine per trip is low enough OR there are some other loads like lamps, PC or whatever - nothing will happen, the voltage will not exceed 14.4V.
But:
The generator consists of two coils and a permanent magnetic rotor generating the field.
The AC coming out of the coils is simply rectified by a bridge rectifier without any regulator.
IF you "eat" 3..5 Amps with any load or if battery needs to be loaded for hrs, the voltage will not exceed 14.4V. BUT if the bat is full and there is no load at all, the voltage will increase over 14.4V, damaging the bat if runnig for hrs.

At the opposite, any 3-phase gen in cars or inboard engs do have field windings instead or permanent magnetics, and the regs are switching on/off the field winding to maintain the proper voltage.

But if you`re fine with your installation -great. My 12V/60Ah bat was a maintainance free type - totally blasted. I measured 15.6V.
And not only at my engine. So I have installed a switch and a voltmeter. After cruising over some hrs (unlikely in a sailing boat :-) ) I must switch off.
If I use the eng only for 1hr or so, no problem.

best, Niels

Yamaha F9.9 AE - not pumping water !

Yamaha F9.9 AE - not pumping water at low speed or hi speeed

dos aney one no much a bout the water ststeme and wher to look on Yamaha F9.9 AE

( i will strip the leg off and look at the pump )
( but i dont want to strip the ebgine of it runs verry good )

I cannot think why you have added your post to a thread headed "Yamaha f9.9 fuel consumption" that is well over a year old.

You'd have done better to start your own new thread with an appropriate title.

However when you say not pumping, is it really not pumping or are you just not getting water from the telltale.

First thing unless it is overheating, is to check that the telltale is not blocked somewhere.

Also check the water intake

If it is genuinely not pumping then check the water pump and renew the impeller.

While the gearcase assembly is off check if you can that you can get a water flow through the engine from a hose attached to the water tube.

Does this model have provision to attach a hose to flush the cooling system. If so can you get a flow through the engine from it?

go to youtube and type in changing outboard impeller and watch an instructional video----regards lenten
