Have the remote version High Thrust (white) F9.9 on a narrowboat. Smashin bit of kit but died after about 2 minutes having reinstalled. Noticed yellow wire from ignition switch to fuse box/battery area disconnected. Ignition switch shows power to red but none to Yellow (separate to multi core remote cable and shown in manual as ignition feed ) and intermittent to Brown in multicore shown as starter lead. Presume original Yamaha ignition switch is u/s and I assume engine ran on its own generated power. Will fit new ignition switch and try again. Question is, have I cooked something by running without yellow lead connected and where should it go ?

Just a quickie
'Common' Yam colours
Red to switch and battery
Brown is normally 'low tension' for ignition
Yellow is another low tension coil wire used for lighting etc
You will not have done any harm with 'yellow' disconnected

Ahh ! Thanks for that Kawasaki, I think I have now 'gotit' ? Have 'destructively tested' ignition switch and with wiring diagram from manual, have worked it out. Contacts were dirty and corroded from water ingress ! It had a three point contactor that gives you :-
1)'Off' but white and black connected to duplicate 'kill switch' 2)'On' Red and Yellow connected which does nothing but give power to a 'lighting' circuit. as you said. 3)'Start' Red, Yellow and Brown connected which continues power to 'lighting' and enegises starter. The engine will run without external power if the 'kill' circuit is not implemented which due to a dirty switch it did in my case ! The 'kill' circuit is a connection not an open circuit.
