Hi All,

Have a Yamaha 8a outboard belived to be 1975-1979 vintage.

Pulled the starter the other day on bits of plastic flew into the water and the starter no longer engages the engine.

recoil and rope bit is fine but it looks like that locks into some sort of ring underneath it to turn the flywheel. looks as though this has some sort of plastic ring round it to engage a pin of some sort from the underside of the recoil hub.

I think it is this plastic ring underneath that has broken up.

anyone got any idea what part I need?

Ian

Yammie bits are still available - I have an old 20hp that I can still get all the bits for. The recoil engages when spring loaded lugs are thrown out as you pull to engage the plate on top of the flywheel - you should be able to take the whole thing to a dealer if you don't know the year and model and order the bits for the recoil unit.

I suggest you Google for a Yammie outboard dealer close to you and pay them a visit. Most bits come in to order from, I believe, Holland and take a week to arrive. My local boatyard posts them to order from a .pdf parts list which also includes very useful exploded views with all parts listed. They e-mailed me this and from time to time I then mark up what I want and either scan and fax or phone them but to persuade them to e-mail the parts list you first need to know what model you have and approximate age. The model no. is on an ali plate riveted under or by the front handle although this often corrodes or falls off so you might need to mail a pic to the dealer or take the beast in to them if you cannot otherwise establish model and age. The parts list is in any event almost as good as a manual for these older engines as it does show pretty much what goes where and has Yammie parts numbers by each bit so once you have the list you can order with confidence over the phone with a credit card.

I have the same model (except it is a canadian version named the P165 - exactly the same other than the name and colour)
I have the parts list and diagrams if you want them?
