I have a mercury 3.5hp outboard. I now also have a Torqeedo which has become the work horse. I planned to try and find a 5hp 2 stroke and then sell the mercury.

This would give me the perfect combo of fast planing outboard for long distance trips and a daily electric work horse.

  1. I’ve found a shop in Las Palmas selling a Yamaha 2 stroke 5hp in excellent reconditioned state.
  2. Are they any good?
  3. They want 750 euros. Is that steep or reasonable value?
  4. Anything particular to look for?

Thanks!

Is it the old aircooled one? I have had one for 20 odd years. Great motor. Not sure if I would be able to source the electronic ignition pack if needed though. If newer model I do not know, but sounds a bit expensive imho.

Yamaha small outboard last are the best of the bunch especially the older 2 strokes.
I wouldn’t be paying that for one, I sold a mint 4hp low hours motor for £350 not so long ago and don’t be expecting to plane with a 5hp with anymore than yourself though.
I’m wary of any reconditioned outboard as that usually means a poor paint job and a service, if your lucky as to strip a small outboard and replace anything more than consumables usually outweighs the cost of replacing it.

At the moment here in Saint Martin you can buy a new Tohatsu 9.8 hp two stroke for $1400. A second hand 5hp at that price seems like poor value by comparison

I sold my old 2/stroke 9.8 for >£600 but the new one cost £1,600 in the UK last year. €750 for the Yam is expensive compared to UK prices but then there would be carriage costs getting it to Las Palmas and problems returning if no good. If the dealer is offering a warranty then maybe OK. Are you (OP) trading in the 3.5?
