Hi I bought a second hand outboard last year and have just got round to using it but the gear shift is very stiff the lever has been repaired in the past and I guess this is why. The grease nipples are very well greased in fact there's grease everywhere so I'm doubting lack of lube is the cause, is there anything obvious to check before I buy a manual and start taking it to bits?

Where can I get hold of a manual?

its usually the shift lever shaft that becomes stiff , despite the greasing.

You dont give any indication of age or whether two stoke or four stroke but if 2T and 2003 or earlier you will find a workshop manual at http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html#

Recent owners manuals are available on Yamaha's website

If it is the 2 stroke 4HP Yamaha this is a common fault, After a year or 3 the gear shift which is plastic grows/binds in the engine base.

You will need to remove the power head (buy the gasket first), remove the gearshift and sand it down until it stops binding.

It is worth doing otherwise, eventually, it will break

Thanks chaps yes it's 2 stroke 1991 I think, the existing handle has broken in the past and been repaired but it's showing signs of giving up so I'll get a manual and necessary parts.
