Is anyone familiar with these motors?
I am helping a friend with his, the motor is about 10 years old.
The question relates to the idle speed lever. It does not do anything. In fact the only way to start the engine seems to be to manually open the throttles by pushing the linkages at the carbies.
Now I would assume that the idle speed lever on the control box is intended to open the throttles by pulling the throttle cable without moving the motor into gear. I think all this should happen at the forward control box. If so there must something disconnected or slipping.
Is it easy to open the control box? All advice gratefully received olewill

yes it sounds like control box. They are easy to work on. Inside are cam plates - 4 inch dia pressed plates with slots in that cam followers run in. The levers rotate the plates, and the cam followers move and are attached to the two push/pull cables. Something mechanical will have stopped your throttle-only mechanism work. Easy to take apart and put back together. Just undo big screws that hold the two die-cast sides of the box together and go from there. Good luck
