I've just bought one of these little engines of unknown vintage- model 2B/6A1 and I can't find a free download service/ repair manual. The Yam website requires one to know the year of manufacture and only goes back to 1998

I don't object to paying but equally I don't want to buy a manual which is not the correct one

Can anyone advise please?

Year is indicated by a date letter on the ID plate. see here http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/599291

I doubt if you will find a w/shop manual on line but this should be the owners manual http://www.manualslib.com/manual/1001198/Yamaha-2b.html#manual

Use more oil in the fuel than 100:1. . . 50:1 if it's happy with it.

Many thanks.
I didn't see a lower case year letter, just 2B 6A1 followed by a six digit serial number, so it may be a 1993 model but I shall check it again when I can.
Both of your links were and will continue to be useful, so thanks again

I believe the year letters are often indistinct!

The last letter of the serial number my also indicate the year according to some sources eg http://www.iboats.com/basics/serial_number_year.html but that may only apply in the USA and Canada

As Vic says, there should be a single digit for the year. Should be stamped into the corner of the serial no. plate.

I picked up one of these out of the skip at our boatyard recently and after a complete strip down and rebuild to clean out the salt-encrusted waterways it starts first pull and runs like a dream. So light and small too - a cracking little motor. The 4 stroke Suzuki 2.5 will be staying in the cockpit locker I think..

Same here! I have just checked the plate that is on the mounting bracket. No lower case letters.
Mine just says "2B", "6A1" and "114308" so, presumably would be of the same era as yours. Looking forward to knowing what you find!

Yes, my serial number is simply 6 digits- same as yours.
Also there are no ID details on the LH side of the clamp, just a stamped Yamaha logo'd plate on the horizontal central part of the engine mount below the engine controls.
I have emailed Yamaha as their website is not that helpful and if any further clarification comes from them, hen I shall update this thread.

Meantime thanks for all of your inputs

Yamaha Support just emailed a reply and here it is :-

"We can advise, that the Serial Number you have supplied, relates to a 1993 model Yamaha 2B.

When enquiring on parts, please advise your dealer that the model code of your machine is 6A1 this will then allow them to refer to the correct Parts Catalogue.

My engine number is 2AB, 6A1, 165378

Hope this helps and well done Yamaha for a quick response

We had one for years- good little engine. If you need to talk to somebody who understands parts for them - Try Caley Marina at Inverness. They will happily post stuff out. No axes to grind- just a good service!

Thanks noted for future reference

I have two of these engines I think you will find they are older, actually more like 1977/1980, you should be able to date it by going on to Browns points, it's a US parts concern for Yamaha, if you cannot find it amongst there parts library, then you can use there form, give them what details you have, you could say that you cannot find the part you want and say you are looking for say a new fuel cock,I say this because I have used them in the past and they are very helpful, they will reply within a couple of days.Hope this helps I'll look at mine tomorrow and check back on this web site,Richard.

Thanks for relaying Yamaha's response. Yes, it does help and I shall certainly keep it in mind for whenever I need spares.
