Have been given a Yamaha 2HP outboard for my tender. Unfortunately it doen't have a user manual for the correct start sequence. What is the correct position for the choke before and after starting? I open it up to start but if I leave it there we end up with fuel coming out of the tell tale, if I move the choke to the closed position the engine stalls! It's an almost new engine with only a half hours use so I can't see that it's a technical problem, more operator error me thinks.

My procedure with most modern small motors including outboards, strimmers, mowers and pumps is to give one pull with full choke and then if it starts you deactivate the choke immediately. If it doesn't start then I deactivate the choke and try with no choke.

I would say that if you have fuel comming out the tell tale at any time then something is amiss, as only cooling water should come out from the tell tale, perhaps the crank case is full of fuel.

The usual procedure with any engine with a choke is to start it with full choke and a little throttle. As soon as it starts close the choke as far as possible while keeping the engine from stopping. As the engine warms up you should be able to close choke completely. olewill
