Can't seem to see a spark on my old 2 stroke. Has new plug. Cleaned card and new fuel.

What would be the next area to investigate? HT lead / stator?

thanks

Just to be sure, chuck a bit of fuel in the carb throat and see if it starts.
If it does you have a spark.
If not you need to investigate further.

Check stop button and its wiring ... if that's shorting you wont get a spark.
Yes, check HT lead

You say "old". Is it so old that it has a points ignition system? If so check points and condition of coil and also suspect condenser as a possible cause. Check continuity of primary and secondary windings.

If not that old and has CD ignition also check the coils. One inside the flywheel I believe and a separate Ht coil.

I believe they changed from points to CD in the mid 1990s

Had this trouble on a 2A. No continuity between the plug cap and crankcase. Found out the HT wire in the lead had retreated from the cap screw. Trimmed the end and refitted= fat spark.

thats all great advice - many thanks all

Think i'll make a start with that HT lead and kill switch

.....ended up cleaning the points and drying the coil out with a heat gun (no not the flame type!) and now have strong spark and engine running great.

thanks for all comments
