aboout 2 months ago i did an 85 mile---12 1/2 hour round the island trip---engine was perfect----3 weeks later the engine wouldn t start----put it in a tank----gave it a good dose of carb cleaner and it started--stopped it---started and stopped it for an hour----ran fine----today it wouldn t start--same as last time---not a hint of life----anyone reccommend a good engineer or yamaha dealer----thanks lenten
 
Starter for 10, where are you ?! If you are interested in DIY, this sounds like a fuel problem, start with the obvious, did you prime it ? is the fuel fresh ? Check the choke is actually working if its an auto-choke model, if not, does the butterfly move when you apply the choke. The carb cleaner is a highly flammable solvent so the engine will run on this until fuel is pulled through, similar to "easy-start" sprays. If the choke is working as advertised, check the fuel lines for holes/cracks/leaks, as air could be getting into the lines somewhere.

Never ceases to amaze me that forumites choose not to give any indication of their location in their profile then ask for recommendations for help but again decline to divulge their whereabouts.

Wake up "lenten" and give us a clue !! You might be in Australia so would a mechanic (rather than an engineer) in Alaska be of any use? This is a worldwide forum !
 
hi all thanks for replies---firstly i am in surrey but i will travel anywhere in the south for a good engineer---after my first non start i disconnected the hose before the carb-- primed it and fuel blasted out----then i took it home and gave it a good dose of carb cleaner and it started ---ran it for an hour in a tank with a lot of stopping and starting---- got a spark---choke works-----my second none start was the same as first--absolutely no life whatsoever----fuel is now 10 weeks old---my guess is carb problem and i am definitely not going in there----regards lenten ps probably get the kill chord disconnected---just another thing to go wrong
 
Now you've done it. The HSE police will come and get you.
It sounds just like a sticking needle valve in the float chamber. I know you said you don't want to do it yourself, but imagine you are at sea and the engine (or inboard) stops. You really do need some mechanical skills.
Just undo the float chamber top and lift it off. Make sure you see how the float connects to the needle valve so you can get it back right. Take the needle slide out and clean the tip by swivelling nipped it in a cotton rag. That can be enough to clean it.
Do not do this hanging over the water!

Give it a whirl.

Ian at DR Engineering ( http://www.outboardsandinboards.co.uk/ ) at the marina by walton bridge. Possibly not the cheapest but I have never had a problem with them.
 
thanks boathook---thats reasonably near to me------lake sailor----unfortunately i wouldn t know where to look for a needle valve---maybe time to buy a small backup engine---i don t get out often but when i do the trips are reasonablely ambitious---last one round the isle of wight---85 miles and i have done arisaig to eigg -muck soay skye and back to mallaig on a camping trip so i need a reliable engine---not sure i need a kill cord on a what is basically a 15 foot fat 6 mph rowing boat ---regards lenten
