This afternoon in the solent, how not to reduce your speed, coming round Calshot spit at 26 kts and far too close to the beach and shoals, boat stops dead in the water, props, shafts, rudders, who knows how much damage, both RNLI boats in attendance Tyne class tows her back to Hamble

Skipper of damaged boat says "I've passed my yachtmasters"

not much point if you haven't learnt how to read a chart!

I saw him being towed back in, very slowly, back to the Hamble. nearly took a pic but bit far away too.
I think she was on Legs, looked the size to be. blue and white hulled boat, that's an expensive lesson.

I used to run a Round the Isle of Wight race for sailing cats.
We based ourselves at the Calshot Activity Centre.
Starts were often at Hill Head and the boats went clockwise round (Bembridge - St Cats _ Needles etc) the finish line was a line to the east of the pier at Calshot.
On several occasions, boats ran aground on the spit just as they were finishing.
So one year, I made the Calshot Spit Light a "mark of the course. All I got was abuse from the competitors - complaining that they had to go round the buoy and then they still ran aground!!!
Calshot Spit is very well marked on the charts - it "beggers belief" that people hit it.

Sounds about right, Just speaking to a chap in the boys room at Valshedas and he said he'd been stuck on the Brambles Bank. Must of been around 2pm as I passed a Fairline around 4pm with sea start lashed to his side in the Hamble.
Said he's done the same run loads of times from Cowes but his judgement got the better of him........ I wonder why?

brambles bank is a good 1000 yards from where the Targa 43 was, he was less than 50 yards off the beach at calshot caravan club.
