I've been sailing for about 5 years and have almost all the qualifications (including YM Theory, VHF, sea miles, qualifying passages etc) to do get my Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. The reason I want to do that is that I'm not too far from retiring and would love to spend some of my retirement as a cruising instructor for a charity. To do that, I need YM-Offshore and an RYI Instructor rating. I live about an hours drive from the Solent and have two questions.

1) Can anyone recommend a good RYA school that can get me to my Yachtmaster ticket? Don't really care where in the world it is. E.g. I did my day skipper in Tenerif and loved it.
2) Does anyone know of a charity that could benefit from a (free) Cruising Instructor? Again no interest getting paid, not even expenses: it's time to give something back. I tried the UKSA and they weren't interested

Thanks

Sea.Regs in Plymouth.

Really depends what you want from/for the charity. I volunteer with Ocean Youth Trust South, sailing experience is just part of the work we do.

Assume that you’re looking for a YM Prep week?
It shouldn’t really matter which school. This isn’t a structured course, it’s an opportunity to sail with an experienced YMI and for you to improve any areas where improvement is required.

These are usually 5 days duration and an examiner will join the boat on the last day (or how ever long it takes to assess all candidates aboard). All YMEs are very experienced and assess to a uniform standard. If you meet the standards, you’ll be awarded the certificate. If you don’t, you won’t ☹️

The RYA website shows CI prerequisites plus it lists available courses.

Many sailing charities are looking for very experienced, well qualified skippers and mates, work with young people often a bonus.

You would certainly find opportunities as a crew member on a larger vessel, you might get work as Mate but no chance of being a skipper at this stage in your development.

Get yourself as much sea time as you can and appreciate that although qualifications are vital, they are only part of the need.

Good luck

The Rona Trust (aka the London Sailing Project) operate from the Hamble (Ocean Shipyard). Two Large Ketchs (Rona II, Donald Searle) and a schooner (Marylynn).

Discovery Sailing Project. Also Hamble Based.

I don't think either will let you start as a skipper but both will welcome someone with your qualifications.

Thanks all and not sure where the skipper reference came from. Never meant to suggest that. Very happy to be skippered. I will contact all these organisations.
