The RYA has registered the word Yachtmaster and its variants (eg Yacht Master or Yacht-master) so that it is now protected in this country. The RYA has also applied for a European Community trademark.

Details of the trademark are on http:/webdb4.patent.gov.uk/tm/text

This explains why the RYA has that funny looking letter R inside a circle (sorry, can't reproduce it here) each time they use the word in any publications from now on.

Some of the registrations are in the name of Rolex.

I am surprised though. I am pretty sure that you would not be able to register such common usage words as Yacht-master (or its constituent parts) in France, simply because a yacht and a master (of a vessel) are fairly commonplace every day names.

Maybe somebody should try registering "car driver" and see what the result is!

Inverted Cone

The inverted cone is the international signal for "RYA Yachtmaster Examiner On Board".

Could become part of the RYA's Trademark?

You would have to register Car Driver - not car driver, which in essence is what he RYA has done with Yachtmaster
