A group of 12 of us at our club are nearing the end of our YM theory. We have Meteorology and Colregs tests to do. Anyone have any good links to practice tests we can try out our knowledge with?

Plenty of reading material about, but more questions would be good.

Thanks, in advance.

You should be able to get hold of past papers, get 3 or 4 and you will have all the questions you are likely to get asked. Ask your tutor he should be able to supply.

Good luck by the way;)

Yes, the previous course at the club all said there were lots of past papers. Our tutor only had one, I think. Done that.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Did YM theory several years ago...DEFINITELY get hold of past papers if you can (you could try the Nottage Institute in Wivenhoe, http://homepages.rya-online.net/nottage-maritime-institute/History.htm they may be able to help)...if you can't, then just read as much as you can from the bibliography your tutor will have given you...it is not that scary if you are up to speed on it...HONEST!!

Good luck!

Flip do some good cards for colregs and met that you can test each other with.

Seconded: my partner James' has just passed his colregs & meteorology YM exams, 100% on each, flip cards were pretty much all we used to revise.

I found Seamans Guide to the Rule of the Road an easy way to learn the regs - which I have then all but forgotten

Seconded: that's how I learnt/revised/reference colregs.

Also I find useful for general reference and revision is the Skipper's Handbook. Pocket-sized, cheap, and unintentionally covers the core bits across the majority of the YM syllabus.

Thanks again for all the links and suggestions. I'm working through them and have passed them on.

All 12 of us got through the Met paper last night, the links and past papers were very helpful, although one or two of us seem to need help in distinguishing East from West (must learn to read).

Just colregs left now.

Cheers.

Phew! All got through the colregs last night.

Here are a few I was unsure of:

What is the correct sound signal for vessel with captain with restricted ability to sail?

What is the flag for 'I intend to go aground' ?

You are sailing through fog and you hear three loud swear words ahead. What is happening?

What is the sound signal for 'I am unsure of my own intentions' ?

When a motorboat overtakes a sailing boat, what is the correct side to pass if he wishes to spill their wine?

You are sailing in fog and you hear a bell ringing, followed by the smell of curry. What does this mean?

You see a vessel ahead with three balls in a triangular shape and hear a loud whistle. What is it?

Answer. Minesweeper, underway and making tea.
