Oh, it's a set price for OBT! Cheap as chips per person, a lot more than 50% if a single bod. But YM exam is £140 per person.

Well I did my exam single handed. Examiner suggested I have crew, but when I explained that I was single handed most of the time anyway, he was happy to proceed. We had an 85nm night passage, and I had no proplem feeding him on route. I took the view I was going to plan and execute the passage 'my way' and that was either going to be good enough or it wasn't. I was also open to learning if it wasn't. I was relaxed and very much enjoyed my exam. In the end it's only a bit of paper, but it's the journey that was important and enjoyable.

If an instructor is being paid to do training doesn't that count as commercial which would mean that the boat should be coded?

I asked at my local sailing school for them to do my Dayskipper on my boat and they refused if our boat wasn't coded. Where they being over cautious then?

If I remember correctly, I recall the RYA have guidelines for the level of safety equipment that own boat tuition and examining should find provided by the boat/owner. I am surprised by the attitude of the local Sailing School.

We have trained own boat tuition many times, but we have a duty of care.

We as the school have a copy of the vessels insurance, and the minmum we require is,

DSC Radio,
Flares,
Epirb (if off shore),
Liferaft,
Life jacket,
First Aid,
Correct set of sail's for forecast,
Serviced aux power,
Fire exting's,
upto date charts for area and almanac,
and CREW AS REQUIRED!

This is minimum!

Power course, OBT Single handed, not a problem at all.

If you see others sailing/powering their way around the water, with or without crew, ask yourself, is that because they want to, or have too? ......... Who has crewed with Chuggin? Not taking the pee, just curious.

I find that sometimes I enjoy in sharing the experience, other times I want to keep it all to myself. Who else sails away from other vessels because they enjoy not being able to see or hear anyone else?

Anyway, There are a lot of instructors willing and more than capable to instruct you aboard your vessel, I bet a few have PM'd you anyway.
