Anyone got any views on the various offerings (TeachMe, Chichester Maritime, Yachtmaster.co.uk, Centaur sailing etc)?

I know several will say I should go to an evening class, but work and childcare commitments will not permit it, and I think I'm quite disciplined at self study.

I was thumbing through a copy of this months Sailing Today recently and I am sure there was an article on just this topic. I could be wrong as I have only a limited time before the newsagent chases me out of the shop. Worth checking out though. Brian.

Apologies if this is a common topic question. I've worked out the Search thing and found several threads which seems to boil it down to NMCS and Chichester having the biggest market share - with Chichester getting more recommendations than anyone else.

Assuming forumites aren't on commission, then I'll take that as the advice I needed. Thanks.

In previous threads, all the people recommending Chichester have been pupils, and there is no commission to be had recommending them. In my view, they deserve all the recommendations they receive.

Well here's a vote for NMCS, I did my DS, YM and OYM with them. They are hard taskmasters and lean towards a RN way of doing things, which IMV is no bad thing.

My missus reckons that I seem to know more than most about skippering and I put that down to NMCS.

And when you do your practical, it's off to Southern Sailing.

Yep, did my YM theory with them /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just finished the www.Yachtmaster.co.uk course. Good course material and very prompt replies to coursework. Very happy with it. With most of these I suspect the weakest link can be yourself. Not often easy to find the 2-3 hours required to get through a chunk of each section. Took me quiet a bit longer than expected.

I did the NMCS course years ago and I thought it was excellent.

It may differ from some of the others since at the time it followed its own sylabus that covered more than the YM requirements and I felt it was all the better for it.

NMCS costs £60 more than Chichester Maritime.... what was it about the Yachtmaster Theory that you think may have been better/worth the extra money?

You had to work hard. I've seen the material offered by other courses, not Chi, but three or four others and they seemed to cover the RYA course syllabus and no more. The NMCS course covered a whole lot more stuff. By comparison my better half did hers at night school at the same time. As homework, she usually had an exercise straight out of the RYA course book, I usually the equivalent of 4-5 exercises for the same module.

The tutors all seemed to be ex-RN officers and, as you would expect, they were hard taskmasters and not afraid to tell you off if, for instance your chart work wasn't neat using a sharp pencil.

Things change over time, I took my YM over 10 years ago and YMO 8 years ago, if they have managed to keep the high standards it is £60 well spent.

All of the above probably accounts for why I rarely look at a chart now and use electronics as my primary information source (just liike the RN...) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm a satisfied Chichester Maritime student.

Sue gives me all the attention I need......... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Seriously, doing Combined DS/YM and very pleased with the course.

I used Centaur and found them excellent, high quality material, very fast marking of returned lessons
