Am I the only subscriber of this once interesting magazine to be thouroughly fed up with the complete lack of any attempt at real journalism especially highlighted in the latest issue - Summer 2013? Pages 16 to 22 full of patronising rubbish as a filler.

Haven't seen it yet...What's it about?

I think my sailing with a baby on board is coming out soon...I hope it's not on pages 16-22

I'm starting to miss having to wait for the magazine to turn up, I can't even get it on Zinio or the app yet :(

Mine lies on the side in the kitchen. Should I leave it in the plastic bag? Note to self, must cancel the subs.

Haven't seen the August issue yet, but imho July's was good value for money. There's always stuff that begs the response - 'meh' - but then I reckon some of it's probably aimed at a readership that includes many without my 50 years' worth of near-death afloat experiences to draw on. I'd say we should give the new helm a fair go - he's practical and seems unstuffy - and the ship has some way on.

I thought it was the best for a few months. Apart from the new boat test, which missed the obvious point of the extreme stupidity of having an open transom on a "cruising" boat there was a welcome variety of approach.

It's about lessons learnt the hard way, containing contributions from several 'well known' sailors. rather entertaining I thought and provokes the question 'How many of these mistakes have I done?'
As for lack of real journalism, whatever that is, try pages 3-4.
As for sailing with babies, too old for that, so haven't read it yet, [but will later].

I came to that decision yesterday, too.

Ten years ago I would read it cover to cover and always feel that I had learned something new and useful. I still continue to learn both on and off the water, but not enough from Y to bother with a sub any more.

That is the problem, when you first start sailing you cannot get enough information and read everything that is going but as you build experience what was once new and exciting becomes old hat.

The revamped Sailing Today is pretty good IMHO. Much more modern with more info than YM, which seems to me to be cruising (sorry) along with little imagination for new and interesting articles.

I haven't read it, doesn't seem to be available yet to download, but I contributed a couple of tales to the article you are complaining about. Patronising? Sorry, don't follow.

Gosh, just goes to show......each to their own!
I thought the new look Sailing Today was diabolical and cancelled my sub after the first three editions.

I get PBO, YM, and Sailing Today - all different. Sailing Today has gone all trendy - looking for the 'Yoof' market? - still like it but it would be the first to go, though I think it is better than before. PBO trundles on and I still enjoy it - my favourite is YM, even though I'm biased as the author of the '5 good reasons to sail in Wales' bit - and a 'filling' contributor on said pages 16-22.
I do think it is difficult for mags to please all comers - when I started I eagerly awaited new issues - now I'm on the other side trying to be interesting. Experienced readers will have read a lot of what's produced already - newcomers will enjoy much more. It is inevitable that interest fades with time, but I've not got to the stage of taking up golf yet.
However, what strikes me is the difficulty of knowing what the readers want - do those dissatisfied posters have any constructive suggestions? Answers on a postcard please....
