well.... for print subscribers anyway

I just downloaded the app, filled in the relevant bits as per the e-mail ybw sent me half an hour ago and bobs your uncle... YM on the iPad.

Nice to receive a free 'upgrade', thanks.:)

Hopefully the back issues since I started subscribing will also be freely downloadable. It would be great to be able to carry my whole collection around with me.

As discussed elsewhere, make sure you use the same email address they have on file in the subs department. Bloody stupid system ...

Erm why is that stoopid ?

To the others. You will get access to all issues from the date you authenticate your subs number. So from now onwards.

If you have any further digital questions please fire away and I will answer as soon as I can.

Cheers

what if they gave it all away?

If they gave all their content away in the digital format

- distribution costs next to nothing

would this make you more likely to pick up a copy of the magazine at a station or ask for a subscription?

would you turn your ad blocker software off so that they could earn some money from the digits?

free

Indeed that's the price of "free content" to the masses ... !

Could do without the vat though ! And don't even get me started on different county territories ! Not as simple as it sounds is it !

Have a good eve !

Not sure I understand David

if it is was really free where does the vat come in?

other than vat on the advertising

as a YBW subscriber I can get the ipad ap for freemans

so where does the vat appear

I am obviously paying vat on the magazine subscription

I also assume that the bandwidth is vanishingly small compared to streaming video - and you get an advertising revenue from the ap - or do you?

Quick answers

Digital mags subject to 20% vat

Apple take 30% revenue

That's on digital apps obviously there is a cost to service "free" subs as well.

Each mag is about 300 mb.

Interactive versions are separate to this.

Happy to answer any more questions on

I'll have a look when I get the next print issue - there is no email address on file for my PBO sub - 'twas a gift from MIL - *I* thought I was _Yachting World_ material, but *she* thought PBO was more appropriate...

You will need your subscriber number which will be on the front of the bit of paper when it comes through the door. If not email me and I will sort it for you.

You *are* on fire!

7 min response at 23:00 on a friday night!

I've fished out my sub number (haven't emptied the bin since last issue arrived ;-), and am waiting for stuff to sync.

Excellent service - many thanks.

Erm why is that stoopid ?

It is stupid that the system uses the email address as the identifier for the user. I have about a dozen email addresses, used for different purposes; I have no idea which one I gave to the subs department.

When I said I was having problems with the app, I was told they had changed my subs email address to match the one I gave in the app. NO, NO, NO! The one I gave in the app was a throwaway that will work for a few months at most, I assumed it was only required to send me a key.

A reader can be uniquely identified using name and postcode, but the subscriber number should be the security check and the identifier. However, the subscriber number was an optional field!

Not wanting to rub it in, but as the IPC/newsstand stable increases in size, us that are employed by IPC get all the IPC titles free. :D

Not everything is free, I have just renewed my subscription to Sail magazine for the grand total of £6 something for 12 issues on Zinio.

I have managed to get around the problem with having to register using my old defunct email address. I logged in to ipc using just my subscriber number and name only. It then asked me for an email address as it said it did not have one on file for me (despite earlier only letting me register the iPad app with my old email address).

It would not accept that my current email address is a valid one, so I had to register my partner's email address just to get in, but that is a side issue. Once it had an email address for me I could edit it to my current one.

Then I deleted the App and reinstalled it, using my current email address. Now I just have to wait half an hour for the current magazine to download all over again.

It is still not a good idea to use an email address as a primary key, as it will often change. Even subscription number will presumably change if I change to digital subscription. Names, postcodes, etc all change too.

But if anyone is stuck due to having forgotten their old email address, updating the account first at IPC should work.
