Much has happened since I wrote Hebridean Diary of a Serial Sailor back in 2012, and posted details of this in an earlier book blog entry of the 16th June 2013. This was a great learning curve not only in discovering how to self publish but also in the art of writing itself, and after doing a second edition where I polished up my writing style (I hope!) and corrected far too many errors, I decided to finish the entirely nautical version as an A4 printed book which I have now published on Amazon`s Create Space titled “Yachting Journal of a Hebridean Sailor, Logs of Papillon of Carden 1980-2013”.
The earlier version was an E-book and more of an auto-biographical account which was 70 % sailing content, the rest being about my life as an art dealer, and some other stuff. I thought the sailing only version might be of greater interest to sailors…. more nautical content with much less philosophising…I think this an improvement!
If there are any budding author`s out there I would recommend doing it the opposite way round than I did, as if you write and self publish the printed book first, the Ebook version is much simpler to follow, especially if there are photos involved. Amazon will even do it for you free of charge.
Anyway, the printed version has been selling moderately well round some of the Scottish Chandlers, and is well illustrated with over one hundred and twenty original sailing images, so may be of interest to those voyagers heading up the Scottish West Coast this season. It is not meant as a guide but more detailed yacht log extracts together with an essay narrative relating to these log entries.
Papillon of Carden is a Dufour Safari built in 1972 and we have covered well over twenty six thousand miles together from 1979 until the present time much of that distance single handed. We have never been out of Scottish waters and she has been in continuous commission throughout this time being taken out every two years for a quick scrub and brush.
I feel that everyone has at least one book in their lives to share, and self publishing is a great way to release this energy, so if anyone would like some advice in writing their own sailing life story, I would be happy to give some basic advice regarding achieving this as an Ebook.
