Tiarella (a McGruer 33ft) is registered and weights are shown as: Net 4.57, Gross 6.62 and Thames 8.0. I know Thames is a calculated weight according to a formula but which is the real weight of the boat? The advert said the displacement is 6,500 lbs.
She is to be trucked down south in March so it's fairly critical!

The displacement is the real weight.. although the manufacturers figure will not include gear, water, fuel ??, etc etc
So in reality it will weigh somewhat more

(Remember Archimedes and all that jazz from your school days)

Gross tons is a measure of the internal volume where 1 ton = 100 cuft
Net tons is the gross less allowances for non earning spaces. ( of a ship)

I don't think she weighs 6,500 pounds - That's really light for even a modern 33ft yacht.

I would think that should be 6,500kgs.

Six and half tons is the right ball park figure for a 8TM yacht of that form, but none of the figures listed actually help at all.
An educated best guess may not be good enough for your needs!
 
My own boat, of similar shape (but without the counter), weighs in at 12,300lb (5,600kg). I would expect the broker's details had a misprint and "6,500lb" should read 6,500kg. Indeed, the ballast alone may be close on 6,000lb.

Agree with the estimate of 6000kg+. The net and gross tonnage are irrelevant A typical modern 33ft boat is at least 4000kgs.

For road transport it is arguably irrelevant as with that size and type of boat you need a dedicated boat transporter which will carry far more than that. May be an issue with your lift however - make sure you have a big enough crane or travel hoist.

Exactly right. Don't be tempted by thoughts of low capacity transport.

If you employ a proper crane I'd expect it to include a weighing facility. So ask the driver and you'll get a true weight (i.e. the boat's displacement as loaded when being lifted).

I'm not usually a betting person but I'd place a small wager on the weight being more than you expect. Our 34' boat has a manufacturer's displacement stated to be 12,698lbs, i.e. 5.7T, but tipped the scales at 7.1T relatively unladen and without the mast. We reckon the cruising displacement to be about 8T.
 
Agree with the above. Our boat is supposed to weigh 2.3t as designed, but even with empty tanks, no ground tackle, and no rig, the crane guy it was pushing 3t. That's a pretty big discrepancy.
 
Just be wary of the calibration of any guage on cranes; I've heard various stories from pro' crane drivers, ranging from ' has to be accurate and is tested regularly ' to ' well it may be somewhere near I suppose ' !
