I am thinking of having my yacht moved from Weymouth to Plymouth by road - don't fancy Portland Bill in January (or Lyme Bay for that matter!). Does anyone know a good (cheap) haulage contractor? What would be the approximate cost? Boat is 27ft and fin keeled.

I used Westcountry marine haulage who advertise in the back of YM. Cheapest quote to move Wizard (28') from Ipswich to Plymouth (£600) and he's a local westcountry firm based in Bodmin I think. Good service with no problems. Not connected in anyway just happy to recommend a local firm.

Try Guy Owen, he's based just outside Plymouth. 07785 767704. He's certainly one of the most efficient and cheerful hauliers in this part of the world.

Sorry to hijack thread, but I'm planning on moving my boat, it is long keeled. Do people normally put them on a cradle or do the companies have supports built into the trailer ? If cradle, any cheap sources of cradles ?

If you use a proper haulier they'll have a semi trailer with built-in adjustable props and pads.

Normally yacht transporter companies are happier without a cradle.

But in most cases they can be transported with or without.

This is my 33' fin keeled yacht on a contractors low loader on the cradle. 5 Tons was a very light load for the lowloader.

The cradle has removable axles so a crane was not required to load it.

I also used West Country Boat Transport run by Mark Davis (Tel/Fax:- 01566 785651 (24hrs) Mobile:- 07802 946 335) based in Cornwall..... near England .......as it states on his cab.
He was helpful and efficient and charged £300 to move my Centaur from Poole to Topsham on the River Exe.
I have no connection with this business.
