I'm considering buying a Digital yacht pc.
The idea is for it to provide all the usual pc stuff like internet, email, iplayer etc in port but then to allow
chartplotter, ais, wind, depth info at the chart table, whilst relaying speed, wind, depth in the cockpit via a clipper repeater or similar
and in addition wifi chart/ais info to a android tablet or using an additional monitor under the sprayhood in a suitable waterproof enclosure which I can make.
Apart from vhf all my current gear is very old B&G Hornet and is past its best.
However wind and depth data is reasonably reliable.
I'm thinking of around £1500 as a budget.
Does the panel think this is viable?
What are the pit falls?
I've gone off PCs onboard and now prefer my waterproof and dustproof Sony Xperia Z2 10" tablet.
It does most of what a PC does, has a long battery life, can be used as a chart plotter and nav data display, is completely wirefree.
You can buy two top of the range models for the cost of the PC, or three lower spec ones. The touch screen & display are excellent though I would not want to put Sony's waterproof claims to the test, but it will certainly be shower and spray proof for use in the cockpit.
There are plenty of accessories available - bluetooth keyboard, holders, usb and hdmi adaptors, cases etc.
After a lifetime of PCs & Windows, Android and this tablet is a revelation and a joy to use.
