Yacht Legs red dots meaning?

Quick question for any Yacht Legs owners:

What do the red dots on the adjustable leg section mean?

My original thought was that it may have meant dont adjust any further but it has a lot more travel above these dots. Is it a reference mark to set too before using?

Your first thought is the correct one. The red dot is a limit mark.

I think the dots appear about half way, It's just the optimal extension.
No problem with extending further but it is probably better to take up adjustment on the lower leg at this point.

Oh dear, two posters saying different things! There could be a "teacup" over this one :- )

But no, in a sense both could be said to be right, here is what the documentation says:

" To ensure that both positive and negative adjustment is available on both sides of the vessel the top telescopic unit should be set up to work as near as possible around the centre of the lead screw.
The red dots on the inner tube identify when the half way position has been reached. By selecting the appropriate clevis pin hole in the foot section tube the footplates should be set level with the lower edge of the keel."

You have to watch riggers in boatyards, if the job is taken out of your hands, they love to use the wheel and leave the top section extended towards it's limits

There are two ways of adjusting the length on my yacht legs a) using the retaining pins (held in place with R pins) and b) using the handle to extend the legs telescopically. Once deployed you can only adjust telescopically. From my memory the red marks are at the limit of the telescopic extension when the legs have been extended by about 600mm ( I have a note that they actually extend up-to 840mm..but that's beyond the red marks'). I usually drop the legs with them fully retracted telescopically and have a chart which I use to estimate what pin to use for the fixed height and work on about a maximum of 600mm adjustment before I get to the red marks but calculate to only have to extend them by about 450mm telescopically.
