A couple of weeks ago I met a liveaboard Dutch couple in Thassos, Greece. They were asking about flights home as they wished to attend the imminent funeral of some friends of theirs; another liveaboard couple. Apparently, their yacht had caught fire and both had died. They said the accident happened in Majorca and they had reason to believe that the fire was started by a flare inadvertently going off on board.
I am wondering if anyone can add any more information as it sounds most disconcerting.

It is hard to believe a flare could spontaneously ignite. At least I hope so. Perhaps they should be stored in a steel box in the stern. The most likely statistically, to cause a fire is a gas system or cooker or petrol storage. The next greatest risk might be a cooking fire (oil) but then only when you are cooking. Electrical problems should not cause a fire if correctly fused so really leaves us wondering what really happened. olewill
