It's fair enough, the crew probably have a deadline, if not for the owner, then for themselves. And being late could possibly start eating away their profit on the trip. If the delivery crew motored for 95% of the trip it sounds like the winds were either light or coming from the wrong direction, which is just bad luck.I naively thought the delivery crew would sail a sail boat most of the way - but no, they motored about 95% of it.
If they cannot maintain 7 knots on the rhumb line, down come the sails, and on goes the engine (actually it probably works out cheaper than paying additional crew costs for the extra days over budget).
Another consideration is this, the relative costs of wear on the engine, and wear on the sails, rigging, deck gear etc. It's amazing how much damage can be done even by a careful crew on a passage of thousands of miles. Safer to motor if you can. Diesel engines take the punishment so much better than dacron.
