Can anyone recommend a yacht delivery company? There seem to be quite a few, and I don't know where to start.

I haven't bought my new yacht yet - but pretty sure I'll get one in Greece. I am hoping to get a few quotes for the delivery back to The UK and I want to avoid cowboys! Have people generally had good experiences? Please let me know.

Hi Long John Silver

For an accurate quotation it will be best to wait until you have bought your new yacht. The more information you can give a delivery company the better. At the very least we would need to know the departure and destination port before giving you a price.

Obviously we would be glad to help you. Our Skippers are qualified Ocean Masters as a minimum, with lots of experience. We always deliver with care and consideration. For a friendly and professional service please feel free to complete our online quotation form, or call us anytime. http://www.halcyonyachts.com/quote.html

Whichever company you opt to use, I highly recommend that you explore the credentials of your Skipper. CV's should be readily available for both Skipper and Crew. I would also recommend that you speak with previous clients. Most companies will have testimonials, but also request contact details so that you can properly gauge previous clients experiences.

Best of luck with finding your new yacht,

Regards

Pete

When we looked at getting our 49 foot from UK to Mallorca, there was little difference in cost between delivery and shipping. Delivery costs have to include breakages and wear and tear. If the boat is new to you, you'll have to ensure she is up scratch for the the long sail back to the UK. We also had to get yacht to Palma for APril so it was better to avoid sailing her through the Bay of Biscay in Spring

I needed to get someone to bring my boat back from France last year. The importer I bought the boat from recommended Phil Coatesworth at PYD who were easy to deal with and did the job in exemplary fashion. I would certainly use them again.

On top of paying the delivery crew, don't forget you will have to pay for the fuel as well, and also some extra for insurance cover for the entire area the boat is going to sail through.

I naively thought the delivery crew would sail a sail boat most of the way - but no, they motored about 95% of it.

If they cannot maintain 7 knots on the rhumb line, down come the sails, and on goes the engine (actually it probably works out cheaper than paying additional crew costs for the extra days over budget).

So factor in the fuel costs for the trip, taking into account that they will be working the engine pretty hard for a lot of the time.

It is worth doing an engine service just before the trip and after immediately the trip. Also make sure you don't have crud in the diesel tanks which could cause a problem when being stirred up vigourously in the Bay of Biscay.

It all adds up......

The guys who delivered my boat did a professional job, arrived exactly when they said they would. The boat was looked after and was clean. The fuel costs took me by surprise though.

You probably need to count about 10K GBP for Greece to the UK as a minimum total.

Yup. Try Phil Coatesworth at PYD. Top man.

Couldn't agree more!

If I'm ever lucky enough to win the lottery and buy a Najad (drool, drool), I wouldn't have it delivered by anyone else!

I sailed as crew with them a few times, so I know the care that they take. It was also the only opportunity I would ever get to sail on some nice yachts.

It sounds to me that you had a bad experience... I always sail when I can, and if becalmed use the engine with consideration to fuel economy.

"Additional crew costs for extra days over budget" should not be a factor unless the delivery is held up due to yacht failure - which is very rare. The price is calculated on the distance of the delivery. If the delivery is held up by unfavourable winds or poor weather the fee will not change...

To give you an idea of costs (10k is way over...), the last yacht I delivered from Greece to The UK created a final bill of around £6000. The delivery fee should be approximately £4000 (covering Skipper and Crew employment and food, charts etc), fuel around £1000 (The Med section is the thirsty part!), leaving around £1000 for crew travel, marina fees and other sundries.

A good delivery crew will be considerate with marina costs, fuel consumption and will balance the delivery time with the welfare of your yacht. The last thing we want is to surprise you when the final bill arrives!
