How do they work out the true cost of a yacht delivery as there are so many variables.

How much should boat owners be expected to pay to have there yacht delivered by a professional skipper and crew.

You may just need to provide a bit more information. Like where is the yacht now and where you would like it delivered to.

As much as they can be persuaded to part with. It's a market like any other. Get your quotes, read the terms, make your choice.

£200.00 per day for the skipper £70-£80 for each crew as required.
Provisions for journey £15-20.00 per day per person.
Travel expenses to get skipper and crew to and from the yacht, any on route expenses.

Possibly more if working over weekends?

Tigawave - you must be joking !! - if you are not then can you put me down on your crew list, quite happy with the pay even though I usually skipper....

Apologies to an unknown forumite, I downloaded his reply to this self-same question earlier because it echoes my approach - here it is :

"£1 per mile (or use £1 = $1 if on other side as costs are much lower there)

£50 per day if delayed by weather conditions

Fuel, Marina / Port charges,

Pre-agreed living expenses or allowance for crew ( £5 per head per day ?)

£100 per day if delayed by mechanical failure on top of repair costs

pre-agreed costs home (flight / trains / taxis / ferries etc...)

Most owners will push for a 'fixed price' instead of the £x per mile which might be agreed after the initial quote.

Owner to provide seaworthy well found craft, maintained, equipped and insured for the voyage.

This to be covered by a formal binding contract drawn up under British law "

This seems reasonable to all concerned.

Good luck

Hi,

that was me replying to a much longer thread in the mototboat section. Tigawave may be able to get these fees if delivering a boat with say an LOA over 40m but for the average yacht/mobo the other figures are more reasonable.

We gave up the deliery business as although i had some great trips on other proples boats I could not make much profit (ie living) out of it.

Exactly! I was answering how much should boat owners be expected to pay! trouble is there are too many people who do it for life style reasons, and will take to little.

Yacht skippers are grossly underpaid. The responsibility and hours, often working/on call 24hrs a day on a passage means less than £150 just isn't worth doing. I could drive a white van or do building work for more and get home at night. It would also be more reliable and less seasonal.

You need years of experience and also specialist clothing, boots, harness, life jacket. I also have a laptop/plotter/gps/ssb portable set up to run off 12v.

I have been paid over £200.00 by owners who appreciate their yachts are well cared for. They get a report as to any maintenance requirements discovered on route, I've also been asked to stay on and supervise yards whilst being put up in local hotels. This was on a 12m yacht.

How much would you pay a builder for a days work?

Hello Temptress

Thank you - apologies again.

My tunnel vision(!) and experience limits me to yachts under 15m, for which your prices are reasonable, I had not thought of 40+m yachts where different formulae apply.

OTOH these prices are for a direct deal between owner and skipper - introduce an agency and there could be a 50 - 100%(?) increase, which starts to approach Tigawave's figures....

I can\'t remember exact details, but....

last year I paid near enough £1000 for delivery of a 34 foot catamaran from Amsterdam to London.

£500 was agreed fee, £500 ish was expenses for skipper plus one crew (travel, 2 days gale bound in marina, fuel, purchase of spares).

Due to VERY bad weather, they took 5 days.

Beforehand, it sounded expensive, but there was no option due my work commitments. With hindsight, given the conditions, it's a tough way of earning not a very good living!

Very pleased with the service all round.

Company was Max Walker (no connection, just satisfied client).

Quotes last year to take a 42ft yacht from Turkey to Thailand, USD20K based on two months duration. Might need to factor in high risk from pirates through the Suez!

Another quote was $30K to put her on a ship from Italy.

In the end I didn't buy the boat so the true cost was zero - for now....

I agree Tigawave! Grossly underpaid!
Many delivery skippers have got oodles of experience, provide a friendly and professional service. Lets not forget they do it for a living.. a.k.a support their families. And yet there is so much bad press.
Often the problem is that, someone has bought the boat. Installed an A.P.... in short spent a fortune on it.
And then get to the final hurdle. And now realise they can''t afford to pay someone the money they deserve to get it to their favoured cruising grounds.
They then hire an amateur and understandably have a bad experience. Resulting on occasion with exponential costs when they damage deck gear, push the engine to hard and don't protect the boat properly.

There are some very reasonable and professional yacht delivery services around.

People must surely see the importance of hiring a professional, who understandably must charge an amount that reflects their experience and skill.
Afterall, lets not forget that although many people would like to cross Biscay. It isn't a holiday. And it is dangerous out there.
Skippers have a tremendous amount of responsibility.

I work for a delivery company called Thumbs Up Sailing Yacht Delivery. I believe our pricing is very clear and transparent.
Although this sounds like self-promotion.
I'd just like to get across that I think that's what is vital for the Yacht Delivery industry. No surprises. No hidden costs.
And most of all an ethos of safety and professionalism.

Amazingly, it was just a normal search on the forum, nothing special.
Although I have to say, much of functionality is pretty dated on the forum.

It is quite popular, so here I am nonetheless!
