Aussie Phil, is his name, he's now opened a small seafood place there, just around the corner, next to the dartmouth arms, I hear it's very good, again unpretentious but reasonable prices and fresh fish! He also does outside catering aswell as running the bar/grub in the YC.

only one word for it ..FANTSTIC. plus as much as you can eat and reduced price drinks for several hours,what more could you wnt on a cold night.. ? yes we sat around the roaring fire also ( timber from pier we are repairing )

Not universal

Having had the interesting experience of serious illness, major surgery and intensive follow up last year, I can only say that I couldn't fault the service I received - from hospitals and from local surgery and community nurses. Prompt, efficient, effective, outstandingly user friendly and, perhaps above all, delivered with a consistent level of kindness and sensitivity that I shall never forget as long as I live. Also had a couple of occasions to take people to local A&E recently, where service was also very good.

Food - indifferent, BUT - I was told - if you don't like it, you can order anything you want from the menu of the staff restaurant (actually very acceptable and including lots of fresh fruit etc.) and it will be brought and charged to the ward. Now, you can't quarrel with that! They also had an enormous fridge where patients could keep anything they had brought in to supplement hospital rations.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I am a big fan of the NHS (whilst recognising, of course, that the French system is superb)

I'd agree - and the Royal Lymington has great food, (even better puds), and a view to die for.

Both the Royal Channel Islands and St Helier Yacht Club serve really good food.

Smoked fast food?

How can you eat smoked salmon as fast food? It takes ages to smoke properly! Or will you actually buy it at a supermarket???

BTW, in Skanör in southern Sweden (I saw a few British yachts there the other week so don't pretend that you don't come there) they've make a brilliant warm-smoked (is that the correct term?) champagne marinated salmon. Doesn't that sound snobbish? It is the best smoked salmon I ever had, though.

I'm glad to hear it Violetta and very pleased for you. My own third hand relationship with the NHS (through a sick family member) this year proved to me it was absolutely awful, pathetic and made me resent paying the taxes that keep it going. It just goes to show how patchy the whole thing is. What's your postcode?Next time I fall sick I'm going to have myself dragged over there!

We ate at the St Helier YC a few times a couple of weeks back and enjoyed excellent food and a pleasant atmosphere (nice to get out of the town also).

Snap !! I also had serious illness, major op., intensive follow up at Leics Royal a few years ago and quite frankly, apart from the actual surgery itself, the standards were appalling. This was with regard to many aspects (basic hygiene, petty politics, staff inefficiency - should it really take over 12hrs to get a commode or 24hrs to change very soiled dressings). There was a total disregard for the patient's dignity - mixed toilets with doors that couldn't be shut due to faulty locks. I ended up pinching some tools from the man who eventually came to mend my bed and sorted some of the locks out myself. He couldn't do it you understand as it was a Carpenter's job. Final straw was mega misdiagnosis of results which almost led to me having very, very serious op. and my boating days would probably have been over. Thank God I went to The Royal Marsden for a 2nd opinion. The food was better there as well./forums/images/icons/smile.gif Never even got an apology from original consultant !!
Sorry, rant over, never mentioned this before and hardly the right thread to do so now.
BUT PLEASE, if you have a serious illness, wherever you are, get a 2nd opinion from someone outside your local area and preferably go to London.

The food served up by the RCYC in Falmouth before the AZAB was brilliant. We thought it was some sort of special for the event but it was the norm, several evenings per week, with large numbers of members getting seriously stuck in.

Not always possible, but if you have to have a serious operation or diagnosis, a London/regional teaching hospital (somewhere that teaches student doctors) is your best bet.

Why? Teaching and research hospitals take all the most difficult cases, and are the most experienced. Your average GP and local hospital see and cope with a multitude of different conditions. All power to them, it's a difficult job. If you have a serious ailment in which there is a specialist...then you go see a specialist.

Marsden do a fantastic job, but not suited to everyone. They specialise in Cancer.

London is not always the best, there are other centres of excellence in the UK, based around teaching hospitals that may offer better service for particular circumstances, eg Addenbrookes in Cambridge, and for heart disease, I'd look a little way out of central London teaching schools (they moved about 10 years ago)

Leicester Royal is a teaching hospital !! Not sure what for though /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. Luckily I have friends in The Profession so I can now find out the supposed best place to go to or person to see. I agree that that is not necessarily always in London. A relatively scared Joe Public doesn't have this ability to choose unfortunately.

Leicester Hospitals

Their reputation - or rather lack of - precedes them. In particular the LRI is dirty and hopelessly mismanaged. When my father in law was hospitalised there a couple of years ago, breakfast trays were still in evidence at eleven in the morning, tablets that had been dropped by frail hands lay under beds for days. Thee is only one decent hospital in Leicester, and that is the BUPA. If you want decent medical treatment in this country, and within a reasonable timescale, then sadly it has to be private treatment.

A close friend had a small mouth cancer. UCH London (which has a good reputation) screwed-up completely, not on removing the cancer but on the restorative surgery. In the end Leeds (General Infirmary?) put him right thanks to a friend of a friend who worked there.

Regrettably most private hospitals are not geared up for a number of major ops because they do not have proper intensive care back-up if things go wrong. You then have to be rushed to an NHS one which is hardly satisfactory. Thats what my medical friends say anyway and is why I was at LRI in the first place.
I won't comment on this topic anymore as it is non-boaty and has no connection with the original thread. I only got involved because someone started talking about the virtues of french hospitals. Appologies for the diversion.
