Yacht charter Chesapeake area

Must be quite a few around Annapolis. I've got an yankee sailing mag here with quite a few charter companies in it. If you want I'll bring it along to next week's drinky thing.

As it happens, although we live in NJ we frequent that area a fair bit. We know the Gratitude people very well as we are likely to be buying a boat through them. In fact, our house sale is going to complete before end March and we plan to move down to Rock Hall (which is where they are) for April/May while we get ready to move onto the boat (all being well, usual caveats, touch wood, etc etc). Would you like me to do some research? I have many current local mags from the area (Spinsheet, NorEaster ) with charter companies etc. I'll also be going down there this weekend to see the boat and check out the apartment we'll be renting. PM me if you want some help.

Cheers

Neil

Yep, an IP 38.
I enjoyed it. Completely different to my own boat from a sailing point of view although it showed a reasonable turn of speed if the wind was around the quarter. It had a very comfortable motion and a good solid feel - instilled confidence that it could have taken us anywhere in the world. As it happens we only took it to Baltimore!!
It's a great cruising boat well fitted out for comfort and that suited us on that holiday.
We did manage to get it stuck on the sandbanks once - it's very very shallow around Rock Hall and they have a number of their very own "Bramble Banks". Floated her off without difficulty but it encouraged us to pay more attention to the chart! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You might try Free State Yachts in Edgewater, Maryland because it is a good location as a base. I spent a season doing maintenance on their fleet to top up cruising funds; a few years ago now, but they were super people. I'm sure they are all good, but a western shore location makes it a bit easier for the airport at the end of the charter. Eastern shore is great cruising ground. The Chesapeake is shallow so don't pick a boat with excessive draught. Having said that, you can have your mast in the trees and be able to jump onto either bank and be in 20' in the Wye River creeks.

If your going to be sailing Chesapeake you must get into Annapolis, its a lovely town, have brunch on a Sunday morning at the Chart House.

16 miles across the Bay from Rock Hall by sail, or about 40 minutes by car across the bridge.

Get's very crowded but it's one of our favourite places there. The sailboat show in October is superb.

I'll second John's recommendation of Free State Yachts. Their charter arm is Chesapeake Yacht Charters. http://www.chesapeake-charters.com/ They recently moved to Herrington Harbour North in Deale, MD, a bit south of Edgewater, itself just south of Annapolis. They are still an easy drive from BWI airport.

Get "Cruising the Chesapeake". http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN...7515880-0696731 It's the ultimate guide to the Bay.

I'll be sailing my new HR40 back from Sweden in April and May, but let me know when you will be here and I'll get you hooked up with locals. I had a great time sailing the Solent with people I met on the boards, and the best way I can think to repay them is to look after visitors here.
