Mate of mine sent me this pic (taken this morning) of an unfortunate incident at Newquay. Anyone know any details?

Yacht driven ashore

A 31ft yacht was driven ashore at Newquay, Cornwall this morning.

The UFO 31 had been anchored out in the bay.She drove ashore under north-westerly winds.

An attempt to protect her starboard side from damage was made with the deployment of fenders.

A spokesman for Falmouth Coastguard said: 'No-one was on board.'

I'm trying to imagine a circumstance where someone would anchor off a lee shore in strong wind conditions on a coast facing the open ocean.

I think they said nobody was onboard. I agree with the comment about about anchoring on a lee shore but leaving the boat seems crazy!

Salvage

last night at 2000 cranes and RNLI were effecting a salvage job. Not a nice sight it appeared that various people were removing kit from boat and shovelling sand from inside hull. The mast and standing rigging was gone but it looked that it was removed rather than lost.
Im not sure but I think this boat has been anchored near the harbour for about 3 weeks, at the time I thought it was risky. Newquay is not a safe refuge for any visiting boats.

Interesting question, I would assume that boats insurer's would normally be liable, but leaving a baot anchored unattended in an exposed location might be considered contributory negligence so perhaps claim could be refuted.

It looks like Towan Beach, just by what we used to call "The Island". It's the next beach along from the harbour. IIRC-it's been many, many years since I lived there.

Spot on small cove to the north of Towan Beach. I am probably wrong but from marks in the sand it would appear boat was carried by incoming tide under bridge to the Island and left at high tide in the cove
