Hi,

My galley sink grey water tank has a Whale Gulper 320 pump connected for pump out and I was thinking of Y-ing the input to the pump so as to have the option of switching to use it as an additional bilge pump in an emergency.

I've looked around and found a couple of suitable 1" diverter valves but they vary in price from £13.95 for this one from Seamark Nunn : http://www.seamarknunn.com/acatalog/y-valve-1-inch-4367.html#.VBKQVrHbwt1 to £42.95 for this Jabsco one at Mailspeed Marine : http://www.mailspeedmarine.com/plum...gle+shopping&gclid=CLy16qjNzcACFSKWtAodCF8AoA

Can anyone tell me through experience whether the Jabsco Y-valve is worth 3 times the price of the uinbranded cheapo ? I don't want to reinstall it if it proves sub-standard but £30 is £30...

I am aware btw that the ships' dedicated bilge pumps must be permanently plumbed so as to meet the relevant standards but don't see any reason not to re-use my very capable sink waste pump as a supplement to the 3 permanently plumbed bilge pumps already fitted.

Thanks,

Boo2

I suggest you read http://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/bilgepump.aspx It may well be that using your sink pump for an hour is perfectly possible, in which case all should be well. Otherwise, it might be better to spend the money on a dedicated system.

Hi Viv, Nice link, I think I've seen it before. Sunrunner does have a manual bilge pump as well as 2 permanent fixed electric bilge pumps, it just seemed a waste to have a Gulper 320 and not have it rigged for use as an auxilary bilge pump in case of dire need. The old manual sink pump will be put to duty as a chain locker drain pump and I may make similar supplementary arrangements for that too in case tere are any spare bods about if/when the worst happens.

According to the manufacturer The Gulper 320 is specified to meet the requirements of boats up to 39 feet in length in respect of bilge pumps so I think my plan is worthwhile.

Just found this thread after I posted a similar thread myself.

OP, I'm planning exactly the same. My gulper 320 is on the end of the grey tank setup just by the grey seacock outlet. I'm going to put a 3 way valve and lead a line into the bilges. Those 320s can self prime from about 2-3m so no problem there.

As you say, for the total cost of about £50 and an hour to fit, why wouldn't you!?

Haven't decided on a valve yet but whale do one for £40. Half tempted to splash out and keep it in the Whale family but the cheaper ones you point to look fine also.
